Given that shoot's low density increase ear area, in order to estimate this parameter it is necessary to calculate the number of shoot per plant.

The following referential values were set:

• Total number of shoots (ShootTot) = 800
• Number of shoots per plant (ShootPlant) = 4

where Nplants is the number of plants per squared meter.

Ear are can vary among values of 0.0006 and 0.0012; for rice a reference value of 0.0008 were set.
