Shimono's approach

The relationship between spikelet sterility and cooling degree-day is expressed by the following logistic function:

where STR represents the number of sterile spikelets on the total number of spikelets, CDD the cooling degree-day (C°d) and Smax, Sa and Sb are regression constants.

Shimono et al. (2005) propose reference values of regression constants which are listed below:

• Smax: 92
• Sa: 3.10
• Sb: 0.0121 

In order to take into account changes in panicle's sensitivity to low temperatures, within growth stages, a weighted function of W(DVI) is used.

The values in this second function were parameterized on the basis of the data of Yajima et al. (1989).
