Spikelet Sterility

Spikelet fertility is an important component of yield that is sensitive to temperatures. An accurate prediction of spikelet sterility is a prerequisite for accurately predicting grain yield. One one hand, in cool climates severe yield losses frequently occur when spikelet sterility is induced by cool temperatures during reproductive growth. On the other hand in tropical and subtropical environments high temperatures may have a dramatical effect on harvest index. Moreover, in the literature a number of other reasons have been put forwarded on the possible causes of sterility in cereals.
