where TTroot (C°-day) is thermal time for root depth, ΔTTroot (cm °C-day-1) is species parameter root depth increase per growing degree day, SWDF1 represents the effect of water stress on carbon assimilation, SWDFdeep is crop water stress at the deepest soil layer characterized by the presence of root.
