For each time step, two methods for calculating leaf area index (LAI, m2 m-2) are applied, (i) exponential and (ii) based on specific leaf area (SLA, m2 kg-1, see topic SLA based leaf area expansion), according to the development stage.

The exponential calculation of LAI rate follows. Firstly, an effective temperature is calculated:



where Tef is effective temperature for the calculation of LAI (°C), Tavg is average daily air temperature (°C) and Tbaseem is base temperature for emergence (°C).

Then this equation is applied:



where LAIr is leaf area index rate (m2 m-2), RGR is maximum relative increase in leaf area index (m2 m-2 day-1) and Tef is effective temperature for the calculation of LAI.
