Leaf area index (LAI, m2 m-2) is computed multiplying the leaf biomass times a specific leaf area (SLA, m2 kg-1) variable according to the development stage:
where SLAtill (m2 kg-1) is the SLA at the end of the tillering stage and SLAem (m2 kg-1) is the SLA at emergence, DVS=1.35 is the development stage code for mid tillering.
Each day, leaf senescence is calculated by subtracting the dead LAI to the total LAI. The dead LAI is obtained by killing the LAI accumulated in the day in the past identified by subtracting the LeafLife (input parameter; °C-d) to the current DVS (a correspondence between DVS and days is maintained).
