Stem base bending moment is calculates as follows:
where g = 9.81 m s-1 is the acceleration of gravity, n = 0.8 Hz the plant natural frequency, X the height of the gravity centre of a shoot, the plant damping ratio, A the ear area, C the drag coefficient and V the gust velocity.
As data for these parameters are not always available, the user may estimate them on the basis of more common information.
The stem base bending moment is then compared with the stem failure moment (Bs) and with the root failure moment (Br).
