Stems photosynthetic area

Other than leaf photosynthetic area, WOFOST considers the photosynthesizing areas of stems and pods (see topic Pod photosynthetic area).

Firstly, an AFGEN table is used for deriving the specific stem area in function of development stage.

Then, this factor is multiplied to the dry weight of living stems for deriving the stem photosynthetic area:

where Phstems is the rate of stem photosynthetic area (m2 m-2), Blivstems is daily rate of dry weight of living stems (Kg ha-1 d-1) and SSA is specific stem area (m2 kg-1).

Then, by integrating this rate (see also topic Leaves photosynthetic area), the daily state of stems photosynthetic area is obtained.
